Our Healing Journey

Ingredient spotlight: H2O2

During my husband's cancer-healing journey, one of the ingredients we chose to explore was food-grade hydrogen peroxide, commonly known as H₂O₂.

At first glance, hydrogen peroxide appears to be a simple substance: Water is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom (H₂O), while hydrogen peroxide contains an additional oxygen atom (H₂O₂). It is this extra oxygen molecule that has attracted the attention of many researchers, practitioners, and individuals interested in this alternative and complementary health approach – including us.

This is the brand we used, which we bought locally. We had to show ID and sign documents prior to buying it.

As we began researching the topic, we discovered that hydrogen peroxide therapy has been discussed for decades within the natural health community. Advocates believe that H₂O₂ may support various biological processes through its oxygen-releasing properties and its role in the body's natural metabolic pathways. Unlike many synthetic compounds, hydrogen peroxide is not foreign to the human body. In fact, small amounts are naturally produced during certain cellular and immune system activities.

One of the concepts frequently discussed in alternative health literature is the relationship between oxygen and overall wellness. Many holistic wellness practitioners suggest that oxygen-rich environments may be less favourable for certain anaerobic microorganisms, which are organisms that thrive in low-oxygen conditions. Others believe that hydrogen peroxide may support the body's natural cleansing mechanisms and help maintain healthy biological function. While these theories continue to be explored, many of the proposed mechanisms remain subjects of ongoing debate and research.

What appealed to us was not the idea of a "miracle cure", but rather the possibility that hydrogen peroxide might serve as one small tool within a much larger healing strategy. We never viewed it as a standalone solution. Instead, it became part of a broader protocol that included nutrition, supplementation, detoxification practices, stress reduction, restorative sleep, time in nature, and emotional and spiritual healing.

As we continued our research, we also learned the important distinction between pharmacy-grade hydrogen peroxide and food-grade hydrogen peroxide, because they are certainly NOT THE SAME PRODUCT.

Read this again please: Pharmacy-grade and food-grade peroxide are NOT THE SAME PRODUCT.

The hydrogen peroxide commonly sold in pharmacies is typically a 3% solution intended for external use. Food-grade hydrogen peroxide, by contrast, is often sold at a much higher concentration of 35% and does not contain the stabilizing additives commonly found in retail versions.

This is the diluted container we kept in the refrigerator. The dropper must be kept separately, otherwise it can disintegrate in the H2O2 solution.

This distinction is important because 35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide is extremely concentrated and must be handled with great care. It causes skin irritation, bleaches fabrics on contact, and is dangerous if used improperly. For this reason, advocates of food-

grade hydrogen peroxide emphasize proper storage (must be kept in the freezer, well packaged and away from other foods), careful handling (gloves please!), and appropriate dilution before any internal use is considered (it MUST be diluted properly before adding the right amount of drops to your water bottle!)

Another aspect that captured our attention was the frequent discussion surrounding the use of hydrogen peroxide alongside colloidal silver. Some researchers have suggested that combining small amounts of the two substances may enhance their individual properties. Laboratory studies have reported increased antimicrobial activity when hydrogen peroxide and silver are used together under certain conditions, leading some practitioners to believe the combination may be more effective than either ingredient alone. The exact mechanisms behind these observations remain unclear and continue to be investigated.

Within alternative health circles, this combination is often viewed as a way to support the body's natural defences and promote a balanced internal environment. Some theories suggest that hydrogen peroxide may improve the bioavailability of silver particles, while others propose that the interaction between the two compounds creates unique antimicrobial effects.

For us, the decision to explore H₂O₂ was rooted in a desire to leave no stone unturned. Cancer challenged us to look beyond conventional thinking and to become active participants in our own education. We read extensively, listened to countless experts with differing viewpoints, and carefully evaluated the potential benefits and risks of every approach we considered.

One of the most important lessons we learned during this time was that there is often no single ingredient, therapy, or treatment that provides all the answers. Instead, healing tends to involve many interconnected pieces working together. H₂O₂ was one of those pieces in our journey, and while each person's path will be different, exploring it helped us better understand the broader role that oxygen, metabolism, and the body's own healing mechanisms may play in overall wellness.

Today, I share our experience not as a recommendation or prescription, but as part of the story of what we explored, what we learned, and how we approached healing with curiosity, research, and an open mind.
